About Yoga

What is Yoga?

Yoga is an ancient practice originating in India where, as evidence suggests, it has been practiced for over 5000 years. Passed down through generations of yogis and gurus it has gained momentum in the west in recent years. Nowadays, in modern day towns and cities across the globe you don’t need to look far for a yoga instructor or studio. Yoga has definitely captured the hearts and minds of people all across the globe. When translated the Sanskrit word yoga means ‘to yoke’ or ‘unite’ though it is often used to describe the physical practice of yoga poses or postures.  When we practice these postures with breath and mindful movement this becomes a holistic practice with benefits being felt across our physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. In short yoga is a movement practice which helps you keep physically and mentally healthy.

The best way to experience this practice is to come to a Yoga class!

Yoga is not about flexibility

Can’t touch your toes? Don’t worry you really don’t need to be able to. Anyone can practice Yoga. Flexibility is not necessary to begin your yoga practice. Yoga works on lengthening and strengthening our muscles and, with consistent practice you will find your mobility will improve over time. The practice of yoga is about breath and movement and union between the two. So, as long as you can breathe you can practice Yoga – It is inclusive and variations for all levels will be offered throughout the classes.

What style of Yoga do you teach?

Most of my classes are mixed ability Vinyasa Flow Yoga classes. This style of yoga is a movement-based practice where the poses are linked with the breath to create a sequence.

The classes will be structured in a way which allows beginners and advanced yogis to benefit. Plenty of modifications for beginners will be offered alongside a sometimes more challenging yoga pose for those who have been coming more regularly.

It’s your yoga practice, and I will always help you to listen to your body. I encourage students to take the variations they need on that day and always offer child’s pose as an option.

How do I know if I am doing yoga right?

“If you’re in a yoga pose and your breath is steady - you are doing yoga.”

About Me

I started practicing yoga in January 2012. I would attend a class at the local Buddhist centre in Croydon on a Wednesday evening. One thing I knew from the first class is that I loved yoga and how I felt after class.

For the next 3 years I moved around a lot, but wherever I moved I tried to go to class once a week and tried a variety of classes from Karuna, Iyengar, Kundalini and finally, Vinyasa flow. Finding Vinyasa Flow was a cornerstone in my yoga journey as I fell in love a little more deeply thanks to a wonderful teacher, full of knowledge and enthusiasm for yoga. She encouraged her students to not only come to class regularly but also try and practice at home during the week too.

In early 2017 whilst living on a narrowboat in rural Wiltshire I found myself unable to make it to a yoga class. With nearly 5 years of yoga classes under my belt, I began teaching myself yoga at home, studying yoga and delving deeply into a home practice. A year later I signed up for my Yoga Teacher Training which I completed in October 2018. I couldn’t wait to find new ways to enhance my own knowledge and understanding of yoga but discovered a love and passion for teaching the practice along the way.

Now I teach an increasing number of yoga classes a week as well and maintaining my self-practice and constantly striving to improve my knowledge of anatomy, philosophy and mindfulness.
